Pediatric Mental Health Counseling

Support your child’s ability to manage their thoughts, behaviors and emotions in healthy ways.

Therapy Sessions

Mental health therapy at kidSHINE focuses on utilizing client centered and strengths based approaches to therapy, allowing your child to gain self-awareness, tools in their mental health toolbox, and increased ability to talk about their feelings and thoughts all while having fun!

Children who require mental health treatment will often meet criteria for a mental health diagnosis and your child’s therapist will discuss this with you during the intake assessment. This meeting will also  discuss your and your child’s goals for mental health treatment.

In weekly, bi-weekly or monthly therapy sessions, these goals will be addressed utilizing an approach that will meld your child’s distinct movement and sensory needs alongside cognitive behavioral therapy, somatic and mindfulness-based interventions. If your child is also seeing an Occupational Therapist, you can sign a release so that the therapists can collaborate, which will enhance the ability of both therapists to help each child move forward.

What to Expect

Mental Health Therapy

Intake Assessment

An hour-long session with the child and caregiver(s) to complete a BioPsychoSocial assessment, so that our mental health therapist can get a good picture of the presenting problems, your child’s history and goals for mental health therapy. The basic question we want to ask is “how will we know that mental health therapy has been successful” and then discuss what we need to do to move that direction.

Parenting Workshops and Parent Support Group

Treatment

Mental health sessions can occur weekly, every other week or monthly, depending on the presenting problems and goals. Sessions will be focused on your child’s mental health goals, but how the interventions look will depend a lot on what helps them be able to talk and do the counseling work-it could be swinging, it could be doing a craft or playing a game, it could be sitting in a cozy spot and playing with fidgets-whatever they need that day!
